Zoundroom vs BandLab (2026): Which One Fits Your Songs?

Published

Zoundroom vs BandLab compared: free plans, prices, lyrics, chords, recording, sharing and AI, and when songwriters use both. Checked November 2026.

Several phones and a laptop on a desk, each screen showing an abstract music app layout without logos, next to a pair of headphones and a small MIDI keyboard

Pick BandLab if you want a free studio to produce, mix and publish tracks with a community around you; pick Zoundroom if you write your own songs and want the lyric, the chords and every take in one private project per song, shared only with your co-writers or your band. Many musicians use both: Zoundroom to write and decide, BandLab to produce.

They look like rivals because both record music on a phone, but they solve different jobs. BandLab is a cloud DAW plus a social network and a paid membership. Zoundroom is a songwriting app organized by song, on iPhone, iPad, Android and the web with the same account.

Head-to-head: features, platforms and price

Each row was checked on November 2, 2026 against BandLab’s US App Store listing and help center and against Zoundroom’s own product documentation. BandLab prices are US App Store prices before tax; Zoundroom lists its prices in euros, and the stores show local prices.

One recent change matters if you rely on BandLab’s free plan: its help center now says that in some regions an active membership is required to use BandLab Studio on web, iOS and Android. Your projects stay saved and you can still download mixdowns.

When BandLab is the better choice

  • You produce, not only write. BandLab gives you instruments, a drum machine, a Sampler, a Looper, AutoPitch effects, stem separation with Splitter and free mastering presets. That is a production toolkit Zoundroom does not try to match.
  • You want a free multitrack on Android. 16 tracks per project at no cost, plus a web studio that opens the same project on a borrowed laptop.
  • You want an audience. The community, public projects and “forkable” songs are the point of BandLab. With a membership you can also distribute releases to streaming services.
  • You make beats from samples and loops. BandLab Sounds and the Looper are built for it.

When Zoundroom is the better choice

When the song is still being written, Zoundroom keeps everything that decides it in one place. You write the lyric in a note and, when a new line comes, tap the microphone inside the note: the take lands right under the verse it belongs to. As you finish a line, rhymes for the one that still needs a pair come up on their own, and the ones that fit the syllable count are marked (rhymes while you write). You put each chord above its syllable, and your band sees it above the lyric in their own chord notation (chords over the lyrics).

Sharing is private and per song: invite your co-writer or bassist from “Share Project” → “Invite”, and only that project opens for them. With Pro or Band, their comment sits at the exact second of the take, with replies, instead of “around 1:10” in a group chat. Tag each take by section (Verse, Chorus, Bridge) and, when the chorus needs a harmony, record over it in the multitrack editor: up to 8 tracks, saved as a new version next to the original.

The Free plan is enough to try it with the song you’re finishing now. Pro adds up to 1,000 projects, timestamped feedback and your own tags, and you can try it free for 7 days on iPhone and the web. A whole band can share one Band subscription: up to 7 members, and the members don’t pay. Compare the plans on the pricing page.

Choose it when your songs live in three apps and you want them in one; to produce the final track with MIDI, instruments and mastering, pair it with a DAW such as BandLab.

Using both together

A workflow that keeps each app on its job:

  1. Write in Zoundroom. Lyric, chords and voice-memo takes in the song’s project, with your co-writer’s comments on the takes.
  2. Produce in BandLab. When the structure is settled, build the arrangement in BandLab’s Studio with its instruments and effects.
  3. Bring the mix back. In BandLab, open the project menu and choose Project > Download > Mixdown As, then import that file into the same Zoundroom project. The band hears the new version next to the lyric and leaves its notes at the exact second.
  4. Publish from BandLab if you want its community or its distribution.

Other alternatives to BandLab

If neither app fits, these are the closest options, with prices checked on November 2, 2026 (US App Store or official site):

  • GarageBand: free on iPhone and iPad (iOS and iPadOS 27 or later), up to 32 tracks; no Android version.
  • Soundtrap: browser studio with real-time collaboration and apps for iPhone and iPad; free to start, in-app purchases from $4.99.
  • Cakewalk Next: free DAW for Windows 11 and macOS 10.15 or later, with unlimited tracks; it needs a free BandLab account.
  • FL Studio Mobile: $14.99 upfront on iPhone, iPad and Mac, for beats and full tracks.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zoundroom free?

Yes. The Free plan has no time limit and includes up to 2 projects, each shared with up to 2 people, plus rhymes and chords as you write. Pro costs €7.99 a month or €59.99 a year, with a 7-day free trial on iPhone and the web; Band costs €19.99 a month or €149.99 a year for up to 7 people.

Is BandLab still free?

Its app is free to download, and the free Studio allows 16 tracks and 15 minutes per project. A membership starts at $14.99 a month on the US App Store and raises the cap to 32 tracks. BandLab’s help center says that in some regions the Studio now requires an active membership, so check what your account shows.

Does Zoundroom work on Android?

Yes. Zoundroom runs on Android, iPhone and iPad, and in the browser at app.zoundroom.com, with the same account and the same projects everywhere. BandLab also runs on Android, iOS and the web.

Can I move a song from BandLab to Zoundroom?

Yes. Download the mixdown or the tracks from BandLab (Project > Download in the Studio, or the Download button in your Library), then import the audio into the song’s project in Zoundroom. Add the lyric and chords in a note in the same project, so the song is complete in one place.

Which is better for a band writing its own songs?

For writing and deciding together in private, Zoundroom: on the Band plan up to 7 members share the songs under one subscription and comment at the exact second of a take. For recording and producing the arrangement, or publishing to an audience, BandLab. Many bands use one for each job.

Does Zoundroom make music with AI like BandLab?

No. Auralis, Zoundroom’s assistant, works with text: it helps with lyrics, vocabulary, chords and structure, and the melody and voice stay yours. BandLab’s SongStarter generates song ideas as audio, and its membership adds AI tools such as Voice Cleaner and AutoMix.
