Zoundroom vs GarageBand: Which One for Songwriters?
Published
Zoundroom vs GarageBand compared: platforms, price, lyrics, chords, rhymes, recording and sharing. Which to pick, when to use both, and what you give up.
Pick GarageBand if you have an iPhone, iPad or Mac and want to produce a song for free, with instruments, loops, a virtual drummer and up to 32 tracks; pick Zoundroom if you write your own songs and want the lyric, the chords and every take in one project per song, shared with your band on iPhone, Android or the web; many songwriters use both, writing in Zoundroom and producing in GarageBand.
They are not the same kind of app. GarageBand is Apple’s free studio (a DAW). Zoundroom is a songwriting app: it organizes each song before and after the DAW, and it is not a DAW itself. So the useful question is not which one is better, but which job you need done today.

Where GarageBand is clearly stronger: everything about sound. Where Zoundroom is stronger: the words, the chords, the versions and the people.
When GarageBand is the better choice
- You want to produce, not just sketch. Drummer, Touch Instruments, Live Loops, Audio Unit plug-ins and up to 255 tracks on a Mac turn an idea into an arrangement. Zoundroom has none of that.
- Everyone involved uses Apple devices. A song sketched on iPhone or iPad can be imported into GarageBand on a Mac, and Logic Pro opens GarageBand projects when you outgrow it.
- You need it free. There is no paid tier: the whole app and its Sound Library cost nothing.
- You mix and master on your own. Zoundroom does not master, add reverb or pan, or export separate tracks.
If you are new to it, how to make a demo in GarageBand walks through a full verse and chorus.
When Zoundroom is the better choice
- The song is still being written. You write the lyric in a note and, when a new line comes, tap the microphone inside the note (“Record” on the web): the take lands under the verse it belongs to. Rhymes for the line that still needs a pair appear while you type (rhymes while you write), and you put each chord over its syllable (chords over the lyrics).
- Someone in the band uses Android or a Windows PC. GarageBand does not run there. Zoundroom opens the same project with the same account on iPhone, Android and the browser.
- Feedback gets lost in group chats. Invite a co-writer or the bassist to one song only, from “Share Project” → “Invite”. On Pro and Band, their comment sits at the exact second of the take, with replies.
- You have dozens of half-songs. One project per song, with tags per take (Verse, Chorus, Bridge) and versions, keeps them findable. When a take needs a harmony, the multitrack editor records up to 8 tracks over it and saves a new version next to the original.
Using both together
A workflow that works for many writers:
- Write in Zoundroom. Lyric, chords and a rough voice-and-guitar take in the song’s project, on whatever phone you have.
- Export the take you like. In the app, ⋮ → “Export WAV”; on the web, “Download WAV”.
- Produce in GarageBand. Open the Loop Browser, choose Files and drag the WAV into Tracks view at bar 1. Apple notes that imported audio, apart from Apple Loops, does not follow tempo changes, so set the song’s tempo first.
- Bring the mix back. In GarageBand for iPhone, press and hold the song in My Songs, choose Share → Song and save it to Files. Import that file into the same Zoundroom project.
- Collect feedback on that version. The band listens and comments in Zoundroom, and you go back to GarageBand with a clear list.
The lyric, chords and decisions stay with the song, and GarageBand stays the place where it sounds finished.

Frequently asked questions
Is Zoundroom free?
Yes. The Free plan has no time limit: up to 2 projects, each shared with up to 2 people, with rhymes and chords included. Pro costs €7.99/month or €59.99/year and raises the limits to 1,000 projects and 10,000 files, with comments at the exact second of a take. You can try Pro free for 7 days on iPhone and the web. See plans and pricing.
Does Zoundroom work on Android?
Yes. Zoundroom runs on iPhone, Android and in any web browser at app.zoundroom.com, with the same account and the same projects on all three.
Is there GarageBand for Android?
No. Apple makes GarageBand only for iPhone, iPad and Mac, so any “GarageBand APK” is unofficial. BandLab and Fender Studio are free on Google Play.
Can Zoundroom replace GarageBand?
Not for production. Zoundroom has no virtual instruments, MIDI, loops, reverb, pan or mastering, and its editor records up to 8 tracks. It replaces the notes app, the voice memos and the group chat around a song, not the studio.
Can I use Zoundroom and GarageBand together?
Yes. Write and record rough takes in Zoundroom, export a WAV, import it into GarageBand from the Loop Browser’s Files tab, and bring the GarageBand mix back into the same Zoundroom project for your band’s feedback.
Does GarageBand have a lyrics editor?
Not according to Apple’s App Store listing, product page or user guide. GarageBand has chord strips to play chords, but no place to write lyrics next to the music. Many writers keep the lyric in a separate app, or in the song’s Zoundroom project.
