Pentatonic and blues scales

D minor pentatonic scale

D minor pentatonic uses D, F, G, A and C, all white keys on a piano and the same set as F major pentatonic. Box 1 starts at the 10th fret of the low E string, but you can also build the scale around the D at the 5th fret of the A string. Three open strings fit: A, D and G.

The D minor pentatonic scale has five notes: D – F – G – A – C. They are the notes of D minor without E and B♭, the two that form semitones, which is why it rarely clashes with the chords of the key.

Tip: Drop your low E string to D and you get a deep open root to riff against while you play the scale higher up.

On the guitar neck

Every note up to the 15th fret; the root (D) is coloured. It sits on fret 10 of the low E string and fret 5 of the A string, the two usual starting points.

Which chords it works over

It sounds right over Dm and the other chords of D minor, and over a blues in D. The same notes make the F major pentatonic.
