On the guitar neck
Every note up to the 15th fret; the root (F) is coloured. It sits on fret 1 of the low E string and fret 8 of the A string, the two usual starting points.
F blues is F, A♭, B♭, C♭, C and E♭, with C♭ as the flat-fifth blue note. C♭ sounds the same as B, so the open B string gives you the blue note, and box 1 begins at the 1st fret. F is one of the most common keys for a jazz blues, over F7, B♭7 and C7.
The F blues scale has six notes: F – A♭ – B♭ – C♭ – C – E♭. It is the F minor pentatonic plus one note, C♭: the blue note, between B♭ and C, which gives it the blues sound.
Tip: On the G string, slide from the B♭ at the 3rd fret to the C at the 5th, touching the blue note at the 4th on the way.
